ATTENTION FUTARIANS

*ATTENTION FUTARIANS!*

_*FROM THE CABINET:*_
For the benefit of all students, *THE OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL AND THE Chief WHIP OF THE FUTA STUDENT UNION (FUTASU)* is working really hard to protect FUTARIANS from all forms of harassment by Security Officials i.e The Nigeria Police, Man O’ War, etc.

Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights provides that “_all human beings are born equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood_". This right prohibits any form of degrading treatment or inhuman treatment of another, irrespective of tribe, sex, colour, religion or nationality.
Section 34 of the 1999 constitution provides: Every individual is entitled to respect for the dignity of his person and accordingly:-
(i) No person shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment
(ii) No person shall be held in slavery or servitude, and
(iii) No person shall be required to perform forced or compulsory labour.
      This right against torture, inhuman or degrading treatment covers the treatment in police custody, prison and in the hand of other security officials. It is illegal for a suspect who is still an innocent in the eyes of the law to be tortured (slapped, beaten etc) or injured only to be found innocent after investigation or trial.

    Nigeria Police Services bill 2016, Part II, Section 7 which provides the general duties of the Police, Sub-section i & j states that:-
i. Shall promote and protect the fundamental rights of all persons as guaranteed by Chapter 4 of the Nigeria Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ rights, and
j. Prevent and detect crimes without threatening the liberty and privacy of the citizens.
    These provisions are been violated in a situation whereby officers of the Nigeria Police stop you and claim to be doing stop-and-search, thereby harassing students, asking for their phones and torturing of any form.
     In lieu of this, students are now advised to *walk around with their students’ identity cards at all time* and report any suspicious activities as soon as possible. Henceforth, any students who fall into this category of harassment or any other security challenges and breach on fundamental human rights should contact the following numbers:

*Barr. ADEBAYO MALEEK TAIWO (ATTORNEY GENERAL/CHIEF LAW OFFICER FUTASU):-* 08062181944, 08178034255.

*Hon. ELEREGBE MICHAEL ELEBZ (CHIEF SECURITY OFFICER/CHIEF WHIP FUTASU):-* 07069667969.

*FUTASU HOTLINE:-* 08120033343.

*TAKE NOTE:* FUTASU is not in support of criminals. We are aimed at ensuring a crime-free society.

Yours in Law,

*Barr. ADEBAYO MALEEK T.* {Attorney General, FUTASU.}

*Hon. ELEREGBE MICHAEL ELEBZ.* {Chief Whip, FUTASU.}

Cc:
The President, FUTASU.
The Speaker, FUTASU.
