Mark Rowley, Britain’s top counter-terrorism officer, said the suspects were arrested during overnight raids conducted at six different locations in Birmingham and at other locations across the country.
The top terror chief said the attack left four people dead, while another 29 have been treated in hospitals. He added that seven people were in critical condition.
“We have searched six addresses and made seven arrests. The inquiries in Birmingham and other parts of the country are continuing,” Rowley said.
“It is still our belief… that this attacker acted alone and was inspired by international terrorism. At this stage we have no specific information about further threats to the public.”
Rowley, an assistant commissioner for specialist operations, said the victims are of different nationalities and that the attacker acted alone.
Michael Fallon, UK’s defense minister, said the “working assumption” is that the attack has ties with Islamic terrorism.
“The police are investigating this man, his associates, where he came from. Their working assumption is that this is linked to Islamic terrorism,” Fallon told BBC Radio on Thursday. He also stated that security around the UK Parliament will be reviewed,” Fallon said.
